Three Free Online Training Programs

The Firefighter Safety Through Advanced Research (FSTAR) program has released three free online training programs that are available on the IAFC Academy. Each course is grounded in research-based findings. The courses are:

1.       Increased Thermal Hazards in Wind-Driven Conditions (1.5-hour course) drawn from NIST research, students will learn about research-based tactics and principles including flow path, size-up, the thermal hazards of structure fires, and how wind can effect the flow path.

2.       Fire Dynamics Terminology (1-hour course) focuses on the research-based language of fire dynamics. New terms such as heat flux, flow path, and door control are reviewed along with the improved understanding of older terminology such as size-up and flashover. Developed in in partnership with the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (UL FRSI).

3.       Structural Firefighting Research (2-hour course) focuses on fireground challenges and research have led the fire service to re-think its tactical choices. This course centers on ventilation, how to best coordinate ventilation and suppression tactics, and the value of transitional attack. Developed in in partnership with the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (UL FRSI).
