Salary Range: $5831 to $7443 per month depending on qualifications, plus benefits.

General Statement of Duties

Commands the operations and activities of all firefighting and emergency response personnel on an assigned shift or may be detailed to a specific assignment, such as Logistics, EMS/Special Operations or Training on a forty-hour work assignment; performs directly related work as required.

These Battalion Chief positions will work a 40 hour work week, however there will be occasional 24-hour shift coverage responsibilities and be assigned to one of the following:

Battalion Chief - Logistics: responsibilities are of a logistical nature in supplies, requisitions, facilities, communications, apparatus maintenance, etc.

Battalion Chief - Training: responsibilities are in managing the probationary academy, in-service continuing education programs, Engineer and Lieutenant promotional training and working with the EMS/Special Operations Battalion Chief on coordinating technical rescue, hazardous materials and EMS training.

In either case, the shift responsibilities include that of commanding the operations and activities of all firefighting and emergency response personnel on an assigned shift. The principal function of an employee in this class is to direct all company activities on an assigned shift including firefighting and emergency response operations. In emergency situations, an employee in this class is expected to perform the responsibilities of the Incident Commander unless relieved by a superior officer. This is a non-exempt position.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or a related field; and
  • Experience at the level of Fire Lieutenant in the City of Hillsboro, with a completed Battalion Chief Task Book, or at the rank of Captain or above from a department of comparable size; and
  • Some supervisory experience; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Special Qualifications

  • State of Oregon certification as a Fire Officer I;
  • State of Oregon certification as a Strike Team Leader;
  • State of Oregon certification as a Pumper Operator;
  • State of Oregon certification as a Hazardous Materials On-Scene Incident Commander;
  • State of Oregon Emergency Medical Technician- Basic certification;
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License, with a safe driving record.
