POSITION ANNOUNCMENT
ASSISTANT CHIEF
S.E. Thurston Fire Authority is currently recruiting qualified applicants to fill an Assistant Chief position. This is a new position expected to begin on or about December 1, 2010. This position is an exempt position and reports directly to the Fire Chief.
S.E. Thurston Fire Authority provides fire, emergency medical and rescue services to approximately 40,000 citizens within the Cities of Yelm, Rainier, and the surrounding unincorporated area of southeast Thurston County. With the exception of the City of Yelm which is a suburban area, all remaining district properties are rural in nature. This highly progressive district serves an area of 129 square miles (includes 45 square miles of wilderness area) from two staffed stations and one volunteer station with a budget of approximately $3.5 million. The District has 26 career employees (includes command and administrative staff) and 12 volunteer firefighters. The District responded to 2,934 calls in 2009.
Position Description:
Has supervisory independence for managing the day-to-day responsibilities of the position. Works closely and coordinates with other department managers in the accomplishment of Department goals and objectives.
Exercises considerable independent judgment under guidance of Department policies and procedures, and State, and Federal applicable laws and regulations.
Responds to emergency incidents as command officer. Determines appropriate action and response to incidents and directs operation to assure the safe, efficient and effective development of personnel, equipment and resources.
The AC lives and works in a fire station on a 24-hour shift. The AC may be expected to attend specifically assigned meetings, events, etc. outside their normal shift schedule as assigned by the Fire Chief.
Qualifications For The Successful Applicant Include:
_ An Associate’s Degree with course work in fire service, public/business administration, or a closely related field is required, with a bachelor’s degree preferred.
_ A minimum of ten years of paid, full-time officer experience in a career or combination fire department serving a population of 20,000 or more from more than one fire station. Experience must exhibit a consistent pattern of participation, personal and professional growth, and increasing organizational responsibility.
_ Successful completion of Fire Officer I & II (NFPA 1021).
_ Successful completion of an Incident Safety Officer course (NFPA 1521).
_ Completion of Incident Command Training (NIMS).
_ Completion of Instructor I (NFPA).
_ Proven experience in working with a unionized and volunteer workforce.
_ Must hold or be able to obtain a valid Washington driver's license.
_ Must pass the District's medical requirements and a thorough background investigation.
_ Must be a non-tobacco user.
- Must live within thirty (30) minutes of the district.

EMS, rescue, community/public service, and administrative practices.

_ Demonstrated record of establishing and accomplishing goals.
_ Ability to provide patience, mentoring, and staff development skills.
_ Ability to interact and establish effective relationships with the community and other agencies.
Salary Range: $98,000 - $102,000. Excellent benefits package.
