Recently there has been a lot of progress in the IAFC’s efforts to establish a nationwide wireless broadband network for public safety. On June 8, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation passed S. 911, the SPECTRUM Act, by a bipartisan vote of 21 to 4. On June 16, the White House held an event to discuss the benefits of building a nationwide public safety wireless broadband network. This event was hosted by Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, Attorney General Eric Holder, Federal Communications Committee Chairman Julius Genachowski, and the President’s Assistant for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism John Brennan.
Now the House Energy and Commerce Committee members reportedly are discussing how to proceed regarding a public safety broadband network. This committee has jurisdiction over the D Block issue in the House of Representatives, so it will have a major influence on our efforts.
Below are the Representatives that are on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. If you live in their district or state, please contact their offices and let them know that you support H.R. 607, the Broadband for First Responders Act. You can locate contact information for these representatives at http://www.house.gov/representatives/. You can even download a letter in support of this bill at the IAFC’s website: http://www.iafc.org/Operations/ResourcesDetail.cfm?ItemNumber=4876
We are making good progress with the White House and Senate. Now it’s time to contact the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
