Pueblo West firefighters are now equipped with bulletproof vests and helmets.
These life-saving tools will add an extra level of protection for the crews heading into potentially dangerous situations.
It's been in the works for weeks now but in the wake of Friday's mass shooting in Colorado Springs, firefighters tell News5 this gear is more important now than ever before.
"It could happen at any time, those events are not planned, and that's where in the fire service, we have to be ready," Brad Davidson, Division Chief of the Pueblo West Fire Department said.
Recalling Friday's tragic shooting at Planned Parenthood only an hour away, Division Chief Brad Davidson says bringing on six bulletproof vests and helmets came at an important time.
"We want to take that extra step to provide that safety aspect to our personnel and make sure that they're safe of going in so they can do their job," Davidson said.
If his team is ever put in that kind of situation, he wants to make sure they are protected.
"The goal at the end of the day is everybody goes home so we want to make sure that we provide the right equipment for that," he said.
If such an emergency arises, firefighters will follow armed deputies with the Sheriff's Office to help with rescues.
