A Mansfield man was arrested Wednesday after police alleged he tried to run over a firefighter and caused two crashes while fleeing from authorities.
The driver, Kalvin Gross, 21, was believed to be under the influence of drugs during the pursuit, Mansfield police Sgt. Mike Napier said.
Mansfield Fire Department was responding to a report of an unresponsive male in his car on West Cook Road at 3 p.m. Wednesday when the Gross awoke and tried to hit a firefighter with his car, Napier said.
Gross then drove away and passed out behind the wheel a second time at Marion Avenue and Bentley Street, police reported. Waking up again, the Gross struck a fire truck while attempting to drive away.
He then led officers on what Napier described as a lengthy pursuit, during which he struck another car at Park Avenue and Trimble Road.
Gross continued driving until he reached Park Avenue and Grasmere Avenue, where he was forced to exit the car because the vehicle was too disabled to continue driving. He ran on foot, but was quickly apprehended.
