Maria Walker is modest when talking about her promotion Friday to deputy chief of the Albany Fire Department — the first woman to take the post. "I understand the importance of it — it's not lost on me. It's an honor, it truly is," Walker said, adding she knew this question would be asked. "But for me, it's work." This isn't the first time Walker has carved a new path for women in the Albany Fire Department. In 2011, she was the first woman to be promoted to captain. But Walker is quick to acknowledge her fellow firefighters, family, fire Chief Warren Abriel and city Mayor Kathy Sheehan for helping her get where she is now. "This promotion shows everyone that there is a career path for any firefighter to work up through the ranks," Abriel said. "She's knowledgeable in the position, and I'm sure she's going to do a great job." Walker, along with eight other department members of various ranks, will be promoted on Friday.
