Researchers from the University of Arizona’s Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health will create the framework for a project to study cancer in firefighters.
Cancer is the leading cause of death among firefighters who are exposed to toxic chemicals while on the job, according to a news release.
These cancer-causing chemicals come in many forms. Firefighters can be exposed to carcinogens by the inhalation of smoke, diesel exhausts, depending on when they take off, and clean their gear.
The projects goal will to measure the exposure of these cancer-causing chemicals and determine how to reduce the cancer risk in firefighters.
