A man was killed in a crash involving a fire truck that happened on Route 9 south in Essex on Tuesday evening. State police identified the victim as 80-year-old William Spitzschuh of Deep River. The crash was reported at about 7 p.m. and shut down the highway for several hours. It involved an Essex fire truck. State police said the fire truck was stopped on the highway after responding to a crash in the area of exits 3 and 4 on Route 9 south. That’s when the fire truck was struck from behind by a Toyota Corolla.
