A firefighter was hit by a stray bullet Sunday morning as emergency crews extinguished a fire inside a Gilbert garage containing hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
The fire was reported inside the garage of a single-story house at the 1200 block of East Sherri Drive shortly before 10 a.m., said Gary Hildebrandt, a Gilbert fire spokesman.
Hildebrandt said the homeowner, who was not identified, suffered burns to his face and hands, and was later transported to a local hospital for his non-life-threatening injuries.
Three vehicles inside the garage caught fire and their fuel tanks exploded. A nearby box with several hundred rounds of ammunition also caught fire, causing bullets to explode, which some neighbors said sounded like fireworks, according to Hildebrandt.
