Five Huntsville firefighters were injured Tuesday morning when a balcony collapsed from under them during a training exercise. The incident happened around 10:15 a.m. as Huntsville Fire & Rescue participated in the last day of fire training at one of three donated structures at 4020 Independence Drive. Capt. Frank McKenzie, a fire department spokesman, said the firefighters had climbed a stairway on the outside of the building to the balcony when the balcony, located on the second floor, suddenly collapsed. "They fell about one story," McKenzie said. One of the men was taken to Huntsville Hospital after complaining of back pain. The other four went to Occupational Health Group with bumps and bruises. "It doesn't appear to be serious," McKenzie said. Huntsville Fire & Rescue several times each year trains by setting controlled fires in structures donated to the fire department. Firefighters also spent two days last week at the site where Tuesday's accident occurred.
