The Boston Fire Department has canned a former district fire chief convicted last month of skimming $50,000 from taxpayer coffers while he ran the department’s firefighter academy. Edward Scigliano, 46, was fired by Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn on Wednesday, the same day the department held a hearing attended by Scigliano. It came roughly a month after he was convicted on 10 counts of larceny and procurement fraud. Scigliano, who had a $141,725 salary in 2014 before he was put on unpaid leave, was sentenced to three years of probation and 750 hours of community service, but is appealing his conviction, according to his attorney, Michael Doolin. Scigliano did not return a message left at his home. Authorities said Scigliano had vendors write checks to his credit card companies and that he took home a flat-screen TV, gas grill, a Sam’s Club living room set and other items paid for with department funds.
