The state attorney general's office has determined that selectmen did not violate the Open Meeting Law in their selection of a fire chief last spring.
However, the attorney general's office said that minutes from an open session May 16, when the board interviewed candidates for fire chief, lacked sufficient detail and that the minutes show the board wrongly kept secret how they determined the top candidate. The Telegram & Gazette had filed a complaint with the attorney general's office over notice of the meeting.
The newspaper alleged that the Barre selectmen’s agenda for the May 16 meeting did not state that selectmen would hire a new fire chief at the meeting, and, therefore, the board failed to inform the public about what would occur.
