Massachusetts fire chief on fire academy training explosion: 'It could have been body bags'

One South Hadley firefighter received burns on his face and another suffered concussion symptoms in an explosion during Massachusetts Fire Academy training that District 1 Fire Chief Robert Authier described as "a close call for everybody." Both firefighters have been released from the hospital after sustaining the injuries in the explosion involving propane gas on Tuesday evening. The explosion occurred inside the Mobile Live Fire Training Unit while it was stationed at the South Hadley Fire District 2 headquarters. One of the firefighters suffered first degree burns on his face and a leg injury, Authier confirmed. According to the chief, another firefighter was transported by ambulance that night with concussion symptoms and ringing ears resulting from the force of the blast.
