Corey Landry, Durham's fire chief, is once again fighting fires after beating back stage 4 lymphoma.
Landry, 47, answered his first call about a month ago, responding to an apartment fire in Berwick, Maine, that displaced up to 20 people. He's also returned to the gridiron as a referee, and this Friday he'll be calling the Dartmouth-Penn football game in Hanover. "I am back to normal," said Landry, who is married with two sons. "I am officially cancer free now."
Landry first realized something was wrong last fall when he felt soreness around his ribcage. Tests later confirmed he had a broken rib, but it wasn't until April when he saw an X-ray of his lung showing a fluid buildup.
The next morning, his left abdominal area was swollen and warm with fluid. He spent 12 hours in the emergency room, and the doctors found the mass, which was responsible for two broken ribs. The diagnosis was stage 4 lymphoma, a type of cancer.
