A brand-new Lexington Fire Department headquarters may cost the town about $19.3 million, according to project architect Jeffery McElravy of Tecton Arcitects. McElravy presented his schematic design for the new facility to Selectmen on Sept. 11. The new facility will go in the same location as the current fire headquarters on Bedford Street. While the building is being demolished, firefighters will stay in a temporary station in the former Liberty Mutual office building further up Bedford Road, near the Department of Public Works facilities. Renovations and a temporary fire truck shelter there will cost roughly $468,000, McElravy said. The new station will include a much larger apron in front of the firehouse doors where even the town’s biggest fire truck can be washed before being backed into its bay.
