Former Canandaigua Fire Chief Mark Marentette has filed a complaint against the City of Canandaigua, saying his constitutional right to a fair hearing was violated. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages that include compensation for the loss of reputation and back and future pay. Marentette, who was terminated from his position in April, is also seeking reinstatement as Fire Chief. Michael Harren, Marentette’s attorney, said in a letter to News 8 dated Sept. 20 that the suit was filed because the city continues to argue that it is not required to prove the charges against Marentette by a "preponderance of the evidence."
