A Madison Fire Department firefighter and paramedic died Sunday morning shortly after his shift ended. A release from the department said Richard Garner, 29, collapsed suddenly in Mount Pleasant. He joined the department in 2012 and became a paramedic in 2017. He first served as a firefighter/EMT at Fire Station 5 on Cottage Grove Road, serving the Southeast Side of Madison, then moved to Fire Station 10 on Troy Drive, serving the North Side. "Garner is recognized by his peers for his passion for the fire service, working with youth, giving back to the community on duty and off duty, and encouraging others to consider a career in firefighting," said department spokeswoman Cynthia Schuster.
