The Kneeland Volunteer Fire Department's water tender was totaled Monday after the road beneath it collapsed, causing the vehicle to crash down an embankment. The incident occurred while the agency was responding to a structure fire on Abbey Road in Bayside. The water tender moved aside and parked halfway on the narrow road and its shoulder to make way for an oncoming fire truck. The road gave way after the vehicle parked. The crew member inside the vehicle at the time of its crash walked away from it uninjured. The loss is a major blow to the Kneeland department, which operates entirely upon volunteer employees and hours. Without the tender, it doesn't have a reliable water source large enough to effectively fight fires on its own.
