After vetting more than 100 applicants in the past year, the city of Charleston has announced who will take the helm of the fire department.
The city released a statement Thursday that Daniel Curia, fire chief in Durham, N.C., has accepted the job as chief of the Charleston Fire Department.
Curia will speak at a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Friday at City Hall.
Other finalists included John Tippett Jr., the city's acting fire chief; Paul Berardi, who served for five years as chief of the Kansas City, Mo., fire department; and R. Allan Cain, fire chief in Cary, N.C.
Curia will step into the new role July 30. His salary will be $165,000 and he will oversee about 350 employees.
Curia has been with the Durham Fire Department for 28 years, serving in leadership roles for the past 15 years. He's been chief since 2013.
