Savannah’s city manager says the local fire union isn’t telling the whole story in recent social media posts about the cuts to the department. Tweets from the local fire union blast the city for taking a fire engine out of service, saying another reduction could be coming any day now. The tweets have been frequent and consistent in their message. The tweets from the fire union have been scathing, some saying Savannah City Council members are playing with lives while trying to save money. It’s some of the material in that social media blast the city manager wanted to clear the air on. Since the city took fire engine 16 out of service late last year, the IAFF Local 574 has pointed out where having that apparatus in service could have made a difference, including at The Olde Pink House fire. The fire union put the recent response to The Olde Pink House fire under the microscope, saying with reductions in service and trucks will only make massive responses like those a drain on resources elsewhere, leaving other parts of the city vulnerable. City Manager Hernandez said in the interview that he hopes the reduction in services is just a short term approach to balancing the budget.
