The borough could force residents to change their addresses if they are puzzling to first responders under an ordinance before the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly today.
“This will only happen if the local EMS service says, ‘Wow. This is so confusing that it’s a life safety threat,’” said Bill Witte, GIS specialist for the borough.
Estimates are that as many as 700 addresses in the borough are confusing and for different reasons. The main problem is many homes have main accesses that are other than the street addresses.
Under Ordinance 2017-12, sponsored by Borough Mayor Karl Kassel, street addresses in the borough would be based on building access.
