Anchorage Firefighters will be training in Cook Inlet for the next three days. According to a release from the department Saturday, AFD will simulate an emergency response to a person attempting to walk to Fire Island and has become “cut off from shore and inundated by rising tidal waters.” Historically the area has been prone to similar rescue situations, “During very low tides, which will be occurring this weekend, it appears deceptively easy to walk across the silt and mud to Fire Island,” the release continued. The change in tide could cause the water to rise quickly. Firefighters said each year this catches people by surprise and they will often times become stranded on patches of mud.
