According to the Anchorage Fire Department, now is one of the most dangerous times of the year for wildfires.
Fire Captain Jay Bird said it's one of the reasons nearly every kind of burning has been banned within the municipality.
"Within the Municipality of Anchorage, we don't allow any sort of yard debris to be burned at all. We don't issue permits for it, you can't burn it in a burn barrel and it's all because of fire danger," said Bird.
In addition, the fire department is no longer issuing permits to burn spruce bark beetle-killed wood. Bird said those trees can be taken to the Municipal Wood Lot for a minimal fee.
Bird said fire danger is particularly high right now because dead grass and leaves that are still on the ground after winter can act as fuel for a wildfire. He said fires can spread quickly and get out of control.
"The way our ground cover is here, it can run underneath the grass and go quite a distance and pop back up and catch other items and homes on fire."
