Rhonda Dunn woke to the smell of smoke just after 7:30 Monday morning. The Northport resident saw flames coming from the area around her refrigerator. She hurriedly put on some clothes, called her dogs and dashed out of the burning home at 6800 McFarland Blvd., Lot 73. Just one of her two dogs came with her. A huge column of smoke could be seen rising from the burning home as firefighters rolled up and Dunn had no hope her second dog could live through the blaze. Northport firefighters brought the fire under control quickly but there was no sign of the dog named Dumpling. Several minutes after firefighters brought the blaze under control, Northport firefighter Dusty Woodard emerged from the charred front door carrying a furry bundle in his arms. Dumpling was alive. Dunn rushed down the street to greet her pet. She swept the little animal into her arms and embraced it with tears flowing down her cheeks. Dumpling appeared to be fine. Three engine companies from Northport Fire and Rescue responded at 7:40 a.m. Northport Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jason Norris said that Dumpling was found hiding in a back bedroom. Firefighters said that the fire started in the kitchen and believe it was accidental.
