CBS42 was given the first look inside Birmingham's newly-built fire station #8.
The Kingston fire station had to be demolished once firefighters started getting sick and asbestos and mold were found inside the building.
In a letter sent to then-mayor William Bell, Birmingham Fire Chief Charles Gordon requested that the city dedicate funds to build a new fire station.
Discussions about funding for the fire station just happened to coincide with the 2016-2017 fiscal budget planning process.
"In the end, I think everybody got what they wanted," said Chief Gordon. "I think the good part of what I saw, came out of it, I heard so many of the citizens express themselves on how much the fire department meant for them and we on the other hand said how much the citizens meant to."
