Finalists from Conway Public Schools competed for first-, second- and third-place awards at the Toad Suck Daze Crawl, Drag and Squirt Competition on Saturday in Conway.
The Conway Fire Department hosted the event.
Assistant Chief Bryan Moix, who created the event, said this is the 18th year the department has held the competition.
He said the department goes to every elementary school in Conway and challenges the students. Friday night they held a preliminary competition and Saturday was the finals.
“This actually gives the kids an opportunity to do some of the things we do as firefighters on a smaller scale,” Moix said.
Moix said the kids get to dress up in firefighter jackets, squirt the fire hose, crawl through a simulated attic space, smash objects with a rubber mallet and drag dummies to a finish line.
Each finalist received a medal, and trophies were awarded to finalists in each division.
Ryder Cook, second-place winner for the kindergarten boys, said his favorite part of the competition was squirting the hose. He said hitting the mallet is the most difficult part of the challenge.
