Local firefighters suited up on Thursday, but not in their usual uniforms. Crews from six area fire departments are spending two weeks at the Rogers Emergency Training Center to learn how to safely and quickly handle hazardous materials. Rogers Fire Chief Tom Jenkins saidfirefighters encounter a number of dangerous chemicals while on the job. Chemicals may be liquid, gas or solids and can irritate the skin or eyes. They can be found in businesses or in tankers. Jenkins said firefighters need to know how to handle all types of hazardous materials but it's only part of the training.
