Searcy firefighters attempted to resuscitate two dogs Wednesday afternoon that were exposed to heavy smoke from a laundry room fire, but the animals eventually had to be euthanized.
The fire started in the dryer at a residence at 14 Weatherstone Drive and was contained to the laundry room, according to Searcy Fire Chief Andy Woody.
"Fire crews went in and rescued the dogs and administered high-flow oxygen through a mask just as they would to a fire victim ”¦," he said. "The vet at Westside [Veterinary Clinic] was very complimentary and said that's exactly the way the pets needed to be treated."
A cat also perished but was dead when firefighters arrived at the fire, which was reported at 3:15 p.m., Woody said.
He said the veterinarian said he was surprised the dogs lasted as long as they did considering how long they were exposed to heavy smoke before treatment was administered.
