The Camp Fire has already destroyed more than 6,000 buildings and 29 lives in Northern California, making it the most destructive and deadliest wildfire in the state's history. Hundreds of thousands of people have left their homes behind, including a couple with strong central Arkansas ties.
Vernon Mayer is a Cabot High School graduate who worked for the Lonoke County Sheriff's Office, Beebe Police Department and North Little Rock Police Department. He and wife Nikole moved to Paradise, California earlier this year. The Mayers are among thousands who have lost nearly everything they own in the fire. "I just feel blessed we made it safely," Nikole said.
As her husband worked out-of-town and the fire began to spread on Thursday, Nov. 8, Nikole decided to evacuate.
