NWFD received the call about 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday from a neighbor who heard the smoke detectors going off next door. According to the release the neighbor saw smoke coming from the apartment when they went to check. The smoke alarm also woke the woman who was in the apartment. She used a fire extinguisher to put out a portion of the fire. Crews arrived within five minutes of the call and helped the 51-year-old from her apartment, due to the woman's quick use of the extinguisher the fire was contained to the kitchen area. The remaining three units in the building were checked and cleared. According to NWFD officials the woman in the apartment was evaluated at the scene and treated for smoke inhalation. Investigators determined that the woman had been cooking and fell asleep, allowing the food to burn and eventually catch fire. Damages were estimated at $3,000. The Red Cross and NWFD are assisting the woman with shelter until the apartment complex can relocate her.
