After a full day of running on calls, it is time for the Engine 53 crew to buy groceries and make dinner. They stop at a grocery store, picking up chicken and, of course, ice cream. Engineer Jim Bushman knows this routine well and makes sure he's carrying a pocketful of temporary tattoos for the children he will inevitably encounter in the store. Even without their turnout coats and pants, they are instantly recognizable as firefighters. Bushman is very attentive to the children, although it isn't strictly part of his job to do public relations. Back at the station, they cook up corn on the cob, baked chicken, squash and beans. They goof around and joke through the meal, relaxing after spending the day working. The crew is still on call, though, and at 7:30 p.m., they're dispatched to once again move up to cover for Engine 54 in Dewey. This time, Capt. Travis Smith suggests they go to Station 54, on Highway 169, to stand by. As soon as they arrive and step off the engine, a medical call at a nearby trailer park comes in. Once again, it's not an emergency call, and the truck lumbers at normal speed to the home. After turning the scene over to the ambulance crew, Engine 53 is allowed to return to quarters.
