Firefighters were called out to a fatal motorcycle crash and three fires over this last weekend, Oct. 3 and 4, according to a Chino Valley Fire District spokesman. Saturday at about 6:45 p.m., Paul Allen Smart, 42, of Chino Valley, was riding a motorcycle south on Highway 89 at milepost 334, near Paulden, when he encountered a chair in the roadway. Smart tried to avoid it, but swerved across the center line and collided with a van headed north. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the van was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Also Saturday, about 1 p.m., a woman was seriously burned by a microwave oven that caught fire at a home in Chino Valley, Firefighter Rob Zazueta said. The fire was contained and extinguished, and emergency crews immediately started treatment on the woman. She was flown to the Maricopa Burn Center, Zazueta said, and the cause of the fire hadn't been determined. Sunday at 1:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire in a RV on New York Place. Two people were asleep in the RV but were able to get out safely, Zazueta said. Crews that responded were able to put out the fire before it could extend to a nearby home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Zazueta said. A wildland fire ignited about 10:30 a.m. Sunday near Cactus Wren and Rhonda Road. The fire was contained quickly and did not threaten any buildings, Zazueta said. It's also unknown what caused this fire.
