Lightning sparked a brushfire on August 27 afternoon two miles west of Roosevelt Lake on the slope of Peters Mountain. By Monday afternoon, it had grown to 800 acres. Forest Service crews moved immediately to put it out, dispatching a Very Large Airtanker (VLAT) to make retardant drops and assist firefighters on the ground with establishing containment lines. Three engines, two hand crews and one air attack plane labored to rough out a line, although that had zero percent containment on Monday. The Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Three Bar cabin is located one mile west of the fire and is a priority for protection. Smoke was visible from Hwy. 188, Roosevelt Lake and Tonto Basin areas. The Forest Servcie appealed to people to watch out for fire fighters and equipment along Hwy. 188. The Forest Service has shifted to a strategy to put out fires quickly. The region has been stripped of fire crews, dispatched to California, Oregon and Washington – where the drought has produced a series of massive megafires.
