Four City of Yuma firefighters who were deployed two weeks ago to assist in fighting wildfires in California have returned home. They arrived back in Yuma late Sunday evening. According Yuma Fire Department spokesperson Mike Erfert, the firefighters were notified late Saturday evening their assistance was no longer needed and that they were being demobilized Sunday morning, and began the process that ended with them leaving the Fresno area, where they had been the past several days. Erfert explained that Yuma’s firefighters, working as part of the Imperial Valley Strike Team, first left for assignment to the “Walker Fire” on Sunday August 16. They arrived in the area of Yosemite National Park early the next morning. While there they were assigned to structural protection duties. Then on Sunday, Aug. 23 the team was reassigned to the “Rough Fire” near Fresno, where they continued with structural protection duties until their demobilization. All the Yuma firefighters are now returning back to their regular duty assignments. “We are glad to have them back and congratulate them on a job well done!,” Erfert said. “Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the Fire Service personnel, their families, and others affected by this season’s wildfires.” Deployed on the Strike Team were Fire Captain Erik Lohman, Fire Engineer Kris Leon, Firefighter Gavin Goble, and Firefighter Jose Huizar.
