A pig died in a fire in Gilbert Friday morning. Firefighters responded to a fire near Ray Road and Val Vista Drive around 3:45 a.m. They found a tack room, which is basically a shed, on fire. The homeowner had three pigs in the structure. He was able to get two of them out but one died in the fire. The small structure was detached from the home so there was no threat of the fire spreading to it, according to Mike Connor, deputy chief with Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department. Firefighters quickly put out the fire. "The homeowner did a great job," Connor said. "He recognized and called 911 real quick and got the other animals out." The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
