Malikah Barfield, 14, and Bryson Burris, 12, walked into the Glendale Public Safety Regional Training Center Dec. 5 and appeared nervous, which you wouldn’t have expected from two heroes. Barfield and Burris were being honored for saving a woman from a burning building, as well as keeping the fire from spreading to the entire apartment complex in the 7000 block of North 75th Avenue. When asked why they were nervous, both said the same thing, “This is just weird; (we) don’t feel like we did anything that special, we just reacted.” The two boys were playing football Oct. 12 when they heard a woman screaming from a window at the nearby apartment complex.
