Fire Chief Wayne Eder is digging for every extra dollar he can bring into Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District and getting certified for wildland fire response is part of his plan. Fire departments receive most of their revenue from property taxes, but some districts make millions of dollars by sending fire personnel and equipment to fight wildfires such as those that have scorched California over the past few weeks, Eder said. They get paid for responding to the fire, backfilling their stations at home with firefighters, and renting out their equipment, among other expenses. “They don’t just get reimbursed. They actually make a little on equipment rental and that adds up,” Eder said.
