As the fire department’s call volume continues to increase yearly, Glendale firefighters know more than anyone that emergencies can happen at any time, especially after midnight, frequently interrupting their sleep. Firefighters must be proficient in many tasks, including getting dressed in the proper protective equipment and getting on the truck promptly, regardless of the time of day the dispatch occurs. One contributing factor to the increase in calls is today’s broad definition of what an emergency is. Firefighters respond to many diverse types of emergency calls, from structure and brush fires, motor vehicle accidents, minor and life-threatening medical emergencies, mountain rescues, and hazardous materials emergencies, to everything in between.
