The Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department is in grief over the loss of Fire Captain Frank Reed, who died Tuesday in a swimming accident while on vacation in Portugal. Reed, 52, will be missed by his family of colleagues in the fire department and by the wider community of first responders in the Valley. The members of the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, the Mayor and Council of the City of Tempe and all City of Tempe employees offer their respect and sympathies. Reed’s survivors include his family and his girlfriend. Reed served the City of Tempe for 19 years, and his most recent assignment was with Ladder 276 at Fire Station 6. Reed was instrumental in securing grants for the department; most recently he worked on one from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Plans for a memorial are not yet determined. The Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department’s labor and management executive team is working to address the logistics of returning Frank’s remains home to the United States.
