A 30-acre wildfire six miles south of Mormon Lake is throwing up smoke visible from Flagstaff. Coconino National Forest spokesman Brady Smith said 40-50 people are on the scene of the Gash fire. Given that forest conditions are drying out and the next couple of days are expected to be windy, crews are "trying to wrap their arms around (the fire) pretty quickly," Smith said. The smoke is visible as far away as the Verde Valley and Petrified Forest National Park. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Smith said the forest has seen "a rash of abandoned campfires" over this Columbus Day weekend. The seasonal employees who staff fire lookouts on the forest have already left for the season, he said.
