The Fort Mojave Mesa Fire District governing board voted Wednesday to replace an aging fire engine with a refurbished unit from Firetrucks Unlimited at a cost not to exceed $350,000. The board followed the recommendation of Fire Chief Bret Scholz. A district apparatus committee had recommended the purchase of a new Spartan Gladiator from South Dakota-based Spartan Motors, Inc. for about $538,000. Scholz said his recommendation was based on the fire district’s capital needs. He said the savings over a new unit could be combined with money in the district’s apparatus budget to pay for the refurbishment of two ambulances next fiscal year. “Do we have the money to purchase a new engine?” he asked rhetorically. “Absolutely. (But) this gives us time to save some money to get the apparatus we need and come up with a better plan to address these needs in the future.”
