The Coolidge fire station, located on Pinkley Avenue, is far from quiet on a Saturday morning. The truck bay is filled with shouts of encouragement and a mantra of “let’s go” as seven hopefuls try out for volunteer firefighting positions. As part of the testing process, applicants not only have to submit a written test but are also required to submit to a rigorous physical test. The physical portion of the test requires applicants to participate in a variety of taxing activities, from dragging a 120-pound dummy to raising ladders.
