For the past three weeks, fires have spread across Grand Canyon National Park and Kaibab National Forest and burned more than 13,000 acres. The Obi Fire, Stina Fire and Cat Fire have yielded multiple road and trail closures, including parts of the Arizona Trail and popular areas in northern Arizona. The smoke from these fires can be seen around the Grand Canyon and has helped cause a 10 percent increase in reservation cancellations at the North Rim Lodge. The lack of snow this winter played a major part in how easily these fires started. While Grand Canyon National Park usually gets six to 10 feet of snow annually, this year they never had to use their snowplows. A myriad of other fires have sparked up throughout Arizona and the rest of the Southwest as the environment faces increasingly dry temperatures.
