Several times a week, an ambulance followed by a fire engine, both with sirens blaring and lights flashing, zoom past Jose Rodriguez as he ushers drivers into a parking lot near the U.S.-Mexico border on Sonoita Avenue. “It’s very loud,” Rodriguez, said. “The siren’s on and they go really quick through here. And I don’t know why, to be honest, because I don’t see any fire or anything.” He’s not the only local to question the familiar routine, which Fire Chief Mike McKearney said reflects a Nogales Fire Department practice in which a fire engine is dispatched to every medical emergency call alongside an ambulance.
