To celebrate the Tonto Forest lifting fire restrictions forestwide, the Blattner Pit had a bonfire on Friday the 13th. Don’t worry, nothing bad happened. “We had 14,300 cubic yards of material collected over three months,” said Fred Aspeslagh, pit boss. On July 13 the Tonto National Forest announced campfire and smoking restrictions lifted at 8 a.m. — exactly the date and time the Blattner Pit started burning. “The fire restrictions, which covered the entire forest, are no longer needed because fire danger has been reduced by increased humidity and rain,” wrote Carrie Templin, public affairs officer for the Tonto Forest in a press release.
