Billed as a new and innovative way to streamline delivery of medical services, the Mesa Fire Department’s community care program was a medical and behavioral health success, getting patients the help they needed in a cheaper, more efficient manner. Although it helped about 13,000 patients in three years, Mesa Fire Chief Mary Cameli reluctantly suspended the program March 1 because she could not deliver on her pledge to make it self-sustaining once the money from a $12.5 million federal grant ran out.
