A combine fire on Casa Grande’s west side Tuesday produced a column of black smoke that could be seen for miles. The Casa Grande Fire Department responded to the combine fire about noon at Thornton and Peters roads. Pat Dugan, of Dugan Dairies in Casa Grande, the owner of the combine, said it was heading to an alfalfa field along Thornton Road when it caught on fire for an unknown reason. Thornton Road was closed south of Peters Road as firefighters extinguished the blaze. The driver was not injured in the incident. Dugan said this is only the second time in 20 years he has had a combine catch fire. He said a new combine can run as much as $500,000.
