Gilbert's $84.8 million proposed public safety training facility eclipses the price of two other nearby fire and police training facilities. That's partly because Chandler built its training center in phases. The neighboring city is just wrapping up a $26 million expansion. It's also partly because Gilbert's main training building would be large, about twice the size of a Glendale training center shared with Peoria, Surprise, Avondale andGlendale Community College. However, the four West Valley cities and Chandler still rely on other metro Phoenix cities for police academies. Gilbert leaders want to avoid that as they estimate nearly 250 police and firefighters in the town will be eligible to retire by 2025. Gilbert's projected retirements exceed Chandler and each of the West Valley cities except for Glendale.
