Fire prevention and education group Old Bisbee Firewise held its first meeting on Thursday evening at the Central School Project, in an effort to protect the community from inevitable wildfires. The group is currently working to become a recognized Firewise USA site, a national fire prevention program that provides resources and information to homeowners living in fire-risk areas. The meeting kicked off with a presentation from Mayra Moreno of the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management, who praised local organizers Al Anderson and Anne Carl for their efforts in getting Bisbee “firewise.” Recognized communities are eligible for grants and cost reductions for fire protection measures, which can include pricey procedures such as removing acres of deadwood from private property, she said.
